Juno Temple for Spin: ‘Kurt Cobain’s Voice Changed My Blood Temperature’

“There’s a great E.E. Cummings quote that says, ‘The most wasted of all days is one without laughter,’” Juno Temple tells SPIN over the phone. “But I would like to add ‘and without music.’”
The 26-year-old British actress’ genuine love for melody is perhaps the best reason why she’s qualified to portray A&R assistant Jamie Vine on HBO’s recently debuted show Vinyl (Sundays at 9 p.m. EST), a period drama chronicling the oft-corrupt music industry in 1970s New York. Helmed by veteran Hollywood director Martin Scorsese and rock icon Mick Jagger, along with writer Rich Cohen and producer Terence Winter, the series follows record-label president Richie Finestra’s (Bobby Cannavale) quest to save his company from financial ruin. Jamie, meanwhile, mirrors her boss’ ruthless ambition and “golden ear” when she offers to manage a shabby proto-punk group called the Nasty Bits.

Temple, who has starred in films like Atonement (2005), The Dark Knight Rises (2012), and Horns (2013), doesn’t just star in Vinyl — she also collects it. She called us up to talk about her life in wax cylinders, getting an iPhone-ready gramophone from Scorsese, and the “euphoric” first time she heard Nirvana.

Tony Aloupis (director), talks highly anticipated feature ‘Safelight’

Thank you to Daniel Hoyos from ‘I Am Entertainment Magazine’ for sharing, exclusively with us a interview of Tony Aloupis, director of ‘Safelight’ featuring Juno Temple as Vicki.

Director Tony Aloupis, talks exclusively about making the highly anticipated feature Safelight. The film stars renown talent Juno Temple (The Dark Knight Rises), Evan Peters (Kick-Ass), Kevin Alejandro (True Blood), Jason Beghe (Californication), and Ariel Winter (Modern Family).

Safelight tells the touching story of a teenage boy and girl as they go on a road trip to photograph lighthouses. Can you tell us where the idea came from?

I used to take a train into Manhattan for writing classes and there was a kid on the same train who had CP. I wondered how he might come to accept his affliction. I liked the idea of young people helping each other believe in themselves. And, the lighthouses added visual and thematic dynamics.

Safelight was shot in the vast California desert. Can you give us some insight into the location scouting for Safelight?

We started in LA and went north until we found lighthouses that we loved. The northern California lighthouses were perfect for the way we wanted to shot the scenes. The furthest north we went was Mendicino.

Rising actress Juno Temple gave a breathtaking lead performance as Vicki. How did you end-up casting Juno?

Our casting agents, Nancy Nayor and Andy Henry, sent the script out to the talent agencies and the response was amazing. Juno came in for an audition and then came back to read with Evan and we decided that she was the one. She had an incredible understanding of the character of Vicki.

Safelight recently screened at the Newport Beach Film Festival back in April. What has been the audience reaction so far?

The audience reaction has been fantastic. People seem to respond to different aspects of the film.

Safelight is a perfect example of how one can tell a beautiful story while, still getting captivating performances. Do you have any advice for our readers who might be looking to choosing screenwriting as a profession?

I think you have to learn the craft and then write as much as possible. Everything you write is important to developing your skills.

Lastly we’ve gotten requests asking where people can view the film. Do you have any more upcoming festival screenings for Safelight?

We have actually just sold the film to a domestic distributor and it looks like we will have a theatrical and digital release very soon!

‘Maleficent,’ ‘Sin City: A Dame to Kill For’ both star Juno Temple this summer

Juno Temple has appeared in more than 30 movies since starting her career in earnest with “Notes on a Scandal” in 2006.

This summer, the busy 24-year-old has two coming out: the refocused Sleeping Beauty story “Maleficent” (May 30) and comic book noir “Sin City: A Dame to Kill For” (Aug. 22).

Both were major technical shoots, a newish thing for the English actress who, despite the occasional “Dark Knight Rises,” tends to favor down-and-dirty indie projects such as “Killer Joe,” “Lovelace” and “Afternoon Delight.”

“We did motion capture,” Temple says of her “Maleficent” job as Thistlewit, a ditzy teenage pixie who annoys her older cohorts, played by fellow Brits Lesley Manville and Imelda Staunton. “It was such a trippy experience for me because I’ve never done a lot of green screen before and this is a whole other realm of making a movie. You’re just in one big room with loads and loads of cameras, and you have to wear these strange wetsuits that are covered in what are like shiny golf balls. Then we had to wear head cameras and be on wires and stuff.”

She loved flitting about with Staunton and Manville, but didn’t get much face time with the film’s star, Angelina Jolie — depending, that is, on one’s definition of face time.

“I met with Angelina briefly, and she was so great and so cool and so lovely,” Temple reports. “But I didn’t get to do any filming with her, no. I filmed with a giant, Styrofoam version of her.”

Robert Rodriguez and Frank Miller’s sequel to their superstylized, hardboiled crime drama “Sin City” also required the actors to work under green screen circumstances for demanding 3-D cameras. Temple, who plays one of the film’s many molls, is confident that the viewing effect will be totally worth it.
