Josh Lucas, Adam Scott, and Juno Temple have joined the cast of The Most Hated Woman in America, the Netflix movie being produced by Elizabeth Banks and Max Handelman’s Brownstone Productions.
Vincent Kartheiser (Mad Men), Rory Cochran (Black Mass), Michael Chernus (Mistress America), Sally Kirkland (Counting Des Moines), Anna Camp (Pitch Perfect) and Alex Frost (See You in Valhalla) have also joined the drama, which started shooting this week in Los Angeles.
Melissa Leo and Peter Fonda are starring in the movie, written by Tommy O’Haver and Irene Turner, also directed by O’Haver. Laura Rister of Untitled Entertainment is also producing.
Hated Woman is based on the true story of Madalyn Murray O’Hair (Leo), an American atheist activist who convinced the Supreme Court to overturn prayer in public schools and was later kidnapped and murdered by a former member of her organization along with her son and granddaughter. Beset by controversy, O’Hair was named “the most hated woman in America” by Life magazine in 1964.
“The colorful and complex story of Madalyn Murray O’Hair has been a passion of ours for several years and could not be more timely,” Banks and Handelman said in a joint statement. “We’re thankful for both the commitment of Tommy and Melissa and the support of Netflix in seeing this film to production.”
Lucas recently wrapped the indie drama Youth In Oregon while Scott, who last appeared in the horror-comedy Krampus, is part of the ensemble cast of HBO’s prestige series Big Little Lies that also stars Nicole Kidman and Reese Witherspoon.
Temple was seen in Black Mass and stars on HBO’s Vinyl.
Brownstone’s slate includes Pitch Perfect 3, which Banks directed, and a reboot of Charlie’s Angels. They are also developing adaptations of the books White Girl Problems and Heist Society for Lionsgate.
